Car AC Evaporator Replacement
The role of the car AC evaporator in your A/C system is to evaporate refrigerant liquid to a gas, and in doing so actually, removes heat from the air which is what gives us that crisp cool air inside the cabin.
As A/C systems are made smaller and more efficient, so are their components. One of the components that has undergone a major size reduction over the years is the evaporator, located under the dashboard. This component is much like a radiator in design and is responsible for removing the heat and moisture from the cabin.
Car AC evaporators can leak due to internal and external corrosion, and in this event, they must be replaced. This type of repair can take anywhere from an hour or two, right up to ten hours, depending on the type of car and whether or not the dash needs to be removed to access the evaporator.
Signs your AC Evaporator Needs Replacement?
Like most AC issues, the first indicator of a damaged AC evaporator is poor performance. Since the AC evaporator is the major part that removes heat from the air, failure is rather simple to determine.
1. The cool air is weak or no cold air is blowing at all.
The cool air is weak or no cold air is blowing at all.
When the AC Evaporator coil or core is leaking, it will impact the effectiveness of the air conditioning system. Generally speaking, the greater the leak, the cooling capacity is reduced.
2. You notice a strange odor when using your AC system.
If the AC evaporator has a small leak, it can continue to cool air. However, if the temperature is inconsistent, it’s a possible indicator of a damaged AC evaporator.
3. The AC compressor will not activate.
The compressor is intended to circulate refrigerant through the evaporator. It depends on maintaining a predetermined pressure to operate. As such, if there is a leak, there is reduced pressure within the system and the compressor will not activate.
4. The AC temperature will vary
If the AC evaporator has a small leak, it can continue to cool air. However, if the temperature is inconsistent, it’s a possible indicator of a damaged AC evaporator.
When to Get an AC Evaporator Replacement?
If your evaporator fails, you can still drive your vehicle but it is not recommended to run your vehicle’s air conditioning system with a broken evaporator.
We advise you to stop using the AC system until you get the problem fixed because not only will it start producing warm air, it can damage other parts of the AC system costing you more money in repairs.
